Perth Accommodation

The Swan Valley and Guildford

Jump on a river cruise and take a leisurely two-and-a-half hour trip up the Swan River from Perth to the Swan Valley. This is WA’s oldest wine-growing area and you’ll not be disappointed in the wine, the food, or the scenery on this ideal day-trip from Perth. Various indulgent cruises, including refreshments and visits to attractions, are available ( If you prefer to drive yourself, it’s a mere half-hour journey from the city. Or take a tour up the river that brings you back via historic Guildford.

An increasing sophistication in local tastes has seen the rise of wine as an accompaniment to good food. The perfect conditions in the Swan Valley (Mediterranean climate and rich, loamy soil) produce some gorgeous wines, notably: chardonnay, chenin blanc, semillon, verdelho, cabernet sauvignon, merlot and shiraz, with some fortified varieties too. However, increasingly sophisticated beer is also on offer: handmade beers such as award-winning organic pilsner and old-fashioned porter are brewed locally.

Although vines, along with other fruits, were planted in this area in the 1860s, wine did not become a serious Western Australian product until around a hundred years later. Now the Swan Valley joins Margaret River to produce some of Australia’s finest wines, deserving of, and receiving, international acclaim.

While on a visit to the Swan Valley, and partaking of a libation at one of the beautiful vineyards or boutique breweries, don’t miss Guildford, the historic town on the banks of the upper reaches of the Swan. Guildford, which was founded as a river port at the same time as Perth, has many fine old buildings open to the public including St Matthews Church, the town wharf and the old courthouse and gaol; and numerous examples of Federation architecture. This comfortable town has a fine choice of antique shops, art galleries, old pubs and elegant restaurants.
