Swan Bells

swan bells

On the banks of the Swan River by the Barrack Street jetty is one of the world’s larger musical instruments. The Swan Bells comprise twelve pre-fourteenth century bells from St Martin-in-the-Fields in London, and six other historic and specially-made bells to make up the ring of eighteen. This is one of only three peals of sixteen bells hung for change-ringing in the world, the others being in Dublin and Birmingham. The eighteen bells are never rung all at once.

The bells from St Martin’s have rung in the new year in London for 275 years, and, among many other seriously important events, announced the arrival home of Capt James Cook from his voyage of discovery in 1771. Campanologists from around the world are nwow welcomed at the Swan Bells, which houses a fascinating collection of clocks, bells, sundials, telescopes and a complete set of tubular bells. Visit the website for ringing times and technical information about the bells (www.swanbells.com.au).
