Subiaco

Once a shabby, working-class suburb providing labour for the city’s industries, Subiaco has undergone in the last twenty years a transmogrification to the extent that now it is the most chic of Perth’s suburbs and shopping districts. Always cosmopolitan, ‘Subi’ retains its cultural mix and nineteenth-century architecture, making it a charming place to visit. Many boutique businesses have their addresses here and the local council works hard at maintaining the ambience.

The Colonnade shopping center is a must-visit for designer clothes and shoes, and epitomises the chicness of the new Subiaco. Subi also has an excellent range of bars, restaurants, nightclubs and cafés. On a different note, Subiaco houses a range of private hospitals and the WA Medical Museum (http://wchs.health.wa.gov.au/services/museum).

The Subiaco Oval is the state’s premier sportsground, the site of many a national and state sporting contest, including the National Soccer League grand final. The Oval is the largest in WA, with a capacity of more than 43,000. However, it’s the ‘footy’, Australian Rules Football (AFL) (www.afl.com.au), or ‘Aussie Rules’ that dominates here, as Subi is home to the West Coast Eagles and the Fremantle Dockers. For a taste of true Australian culture, come and see a footy game, eat a meat pie and drink a cold beer.
